Farm Touring

It was highly anticipated in my mind, as last year I had a blast on the Midlands Food Tour.  The hurricane pushed it back a few weeks but luckily we were all fully well and ready to enjoy the day (a nice break from all the housework we have been spending our Saturdays).  The Russell girls and my mom were able to join us for the fun!  We started with the farm furthest away, Arnold Farms.
Even though we saw a variety of animals throughout the day I think my kids favorite were the friendly dogs and cats that they got to meet.
We were shown how rice was grown along with a few veggies. (Side note: if you see an awesome picture odds are my sister, Danielle, took it.)
We bought some yummy organic grits from an awesome farmer and he threw in the biggest sweet potatoes that I have ever seen!

The one potato fed our whole family and we had leftovers!
We will added it to the organic rainbow beans for a start of an amazing meal!
Our next stop, Carolina Bay Farms, also had many animals running about, including a talking turkey.
It seemed like a lovely place, but little information.
Fire Barrel was up next and we were quickly visited by the goats!
Since goats eat pretty much anything, the kids enjoyed finding some long grass near by to give to them!
Shiloh would loudly squeal/scream each time she did so (which was a lot)!
Even the littlest littles were brave.
Mom got in on the action and seemed surprised at how hard they took her grass.
Shiloh did enjoy lying down on this bench but quickly sat up when the farmer explained that that was where they milked the goats!
There is something special about a Grammy, and an amazing day in the country.
My mom was such a good sport to take this picture before we left!
I almost drove by Meadow Acres Chestnuts without realizing it but so glad we saw the signs! The owner was great in giving us a tour about their beehives and chestnuts.
Some little three-year-old still prefers to be held, that is if he is not running.
I knew zero about chestnuts so it was pretty fascinating to learn more about this plant.  The pods were very poky on the outside!
The littles loved searching the ground to find some nuts to help collect!
And they adored being able to sit on the tractor!
Such a fun little stop, one of the favorites for sure!
They had a couple of rescued raccoons in the back.  Which slowly woke up from their slumber to get a donut treat!
Some of the littles had to be greatly encouraged to leave the tractor to continue on with the tour.
Next up was Lessville Aquaponics which was interesting in it's own right.  However, I realized that I managed not to take any pictures there.
A repeat visit form the previous year that we enjoyed was Terra Kotta Farms.
The owner's daughter did a fabulous job giving us the tour of the animals (she even "yes Ma'am"ed me a lot).
Shiloh got to pet a shy bunny!
The chickens were mostly free to range there and it was fun seeing the many spots they found to lay eggs!
We did skip the part of the tour that detailed the chicken processing (we decided to save the gory details from the kids).  We had just a few minutes to squeeze in one last stop The Winery at Mercer House
We tried a variety of different muscadine wines and thought a coffee pairing would be a great idea!  Such a beautiful property, I just wish we had more time to explore!
One last picture with my precious boy that hung in there without a nap!
While we managed to hit all but three farms, I think we had a full fantastic day and look forward to the next one, as well as enjoying our new goods!  If your in the area you should definitely check it out and support our local farmers.

38

As the hope of cooler weather approaches, September always means birthday to me!  After being awaken by my girls with cards/pictures, they were quickly headed off to school.
I had a sweet breakfast with my boys. My special man made me some gluten free french toast, which was amazing!  Beach is usually gone when I get up in the am so his presence is something that is to be cherished.
Zoe had made me a banner that read: Happy Birthday Mommy Get well soon.  My health had me on a major struggle so far this month and I was just hoping to be well enough this day!
Fortunately, that morning I did wake up feeling well!  I had some great quiet time in the park (thanks for my sister for watching Ezra), as this was the way I wanted to spend my morning..
and reflected on the many blessings in my life.  (Shiloh's card from that day.)
I cashed in some birthday coupons, including a salad and smoothie.
My little man enjoyed his new hat!
I was greatly anticipating my date night!  God had blessed us with a free night out and Beach and I were beyond excited about such!
Because it was my birthday, we were given a special steak appetizer.
I didn't take a picture of my main course, steak, as I dug in to fast!

Don't worry I shared!
And a little night cap to end the evening!
There was one little little not yet in bed that ended the day just right with some snuggles!

Then on Sunday we broke in the parents new house with a few presents!
My girls were so excited to give me what they had bought.  I included this not so flattering picture as it reminds me of how much joy filled my heart from that day!
Me getting nerdy regarding my new blue light blocker glasses!
I loved them and all my other crunchy gifts.  Here is to another great birthday!

Skating Lessons

I can't tell you how long it has been since I have been ice skating....but I know it is over 15 years!  However, when I saw a Groupon for a great deal, I snagged it up.  Beach and I have been trying to take the kids out on individual dates.  Honestly this doesn't happen unless we are very intentional and make a plan.  Time seems to go so quickly that it can easily slip by.
I'm not interested in going out for sugary treats for our dates, so that does not leave a ton of options.  (I admit that in my head I do equate special date time with something that my palate would enjoy but I don't want my kids to have just that association.)  For Shiloh's date I thought it would be fun for us to try ice skating together, so we ditched nap time one Sunday for bonding together.
It wasn't until we actual got right up to the ice that I thought, "Hummm, this might go very badly.  It takes a lot of core strength, which is not her strength, for balance and just might not work at all."
She let me leave her side for a quick picture but then began to somewhat panic without me there.
However, it wasn't long until she was ready to let the wall go and head out to the middle. I so loved just getting to hold her hand and connect to her in this way.  As time went on I could sense the amount of support that she needed from my hand change, from practically holding her up to sensing her confidence and letting my hand go.  I suppose that is pretty much how a healthy life should go with a parent.
Every so often we would take a break, which lasted a few seconds before she wanted to go again, and watch the other skaters.
I managed to take some selfies.
After watching some amazing younger kids doing some tricks she decided that she would skate out on her own for a bit.
It would often lead to a fall, where she was ready for me to help her back up.  We would hold hands for awhile and she would repeat this again.
I was just so proud of her and her trying spirit.
I love just watching this little, so fierce and beautiful, so different from me and yet she is part of the tribe from me.
She will do amazing things one day!  I just hope I get to watch.  I love you my little Shishi!
