After enjoying breakfast (completed by some of the goodies we had gotten at Happy Cow the previous day), we were ready for some more adventure. We headed out on the hour trip to Helen and stopped at a coffee spot right outside town.
We stopped at the visitor center (which was very helpful in getting info on free parking in town and some other coupons) and then set out to find lunch.
It was crazy busy! We went during Oktoberfest (which I did not think was a huge deal, as it spans over several weeks). After waiting in line at a cafe for about an hour (and still did not seem promising), I ventured off with the kids to see what other options would be available. I thankfully found a place that soon got us in!
I wanted something authentic so being that the name was Muller's Famous Fried Cheese Cafe, I had to get the fried cheese and Beach was craving a reuben! We, also shared a soft pretzel.
We then checked out some of the stores nearby. While the food was great at lunch, the sibling rivalry and large crowds left a bad taste in my mouth. I found an appropriate t-shirt to match my feelings after lunch (I didn't end up getting this one but got a cute sweatshirt to match Zoe instead).
We took some random pictures around town.
There were so many people, and it was fun to see so many dressed up. While we did see some little kids, I saw no nother kids that were my children's age while we were there. I think the biggest thing to do was to drink beer in your german dress up clothes (which we did not participate in). The crowd did not seem to bother my kids (thankfully), as much as it got my anxiety going!
The only dress up we did...
We found a yummy popcorn shop on a side street along the river where we bought some more fish food. However, the fish there were not interested in such.
More photographs of the silly things we found along the way!
I do love how the town does have a European feel to it (just a lot more touristy).
Even a windmill hotel...
Then I was ready to head out of town and get some waterfall/hikes in! We headed out in the crazy traffic, for me to realize that even though it was only 3:30, the area we were headed to was closing very soon. I was super bummed for this and my "back up" places were not available because of the recent storms. So I brainstormed from my research in the area and we headed to one other spot that I knew of....
Babyland General! It was half joke/half nostalgia, as I recalled foundly going there when I was a child with my grandparents. The place where cabbage patch babies are born and adopted.
The property is gorgeous and a lot less crowded. The inside had been redone....and was more like a huge store. But we did have fun!
Ezra found one that looked like him (and would have adopted it - but the hefty price tag prevented such).
We took some fun awkward pictures!
And enjoyed walking around the building a bit. Girls liked this area!
There was a brewery that was nearby that had a food truck so we landed there for dinner. (While I had originally hoped for dinner in Helen, there was no way I was going back with that traffic and crowd!)
It was nice to eat outside in the hill country and the kids were even able to greet the horses nextdoor.
We headed the hour back towards our AirB&B and settled in for the evening. The day did not go quite as I planned (which can be difficult for me) but still full of memories and fun.
